Project progress - Bird Families of the World 249/250
99.6%

More then 100 endemic bird species can be seen in this unique shaped island but I had only one main target on my short Sulawesi visit. Luckily we’ve got Hylocitrea, the only endemic bird family here, on our first stop as we entered Lore Lindu national park, and I even got some lousy record photo. Good start which gave wrong impression of how  difficult it’s gone be. On the following days, we heard  Hylocitreas a few times, even got a quick view once or twice, but not a real photographing opportunity. Only on our last day, packed and ready to  go to Palu airport, we had a short stop at Danau Tambing, just to wrap up some administrative issues. I slipped for a quicky near the bridge and finally got the chance to take a proper shot. Even the Geomalia showed up for quick farewell. 249 down, 1 to go!

249. Family #216: Hylocitrea (Hylocitreidae) |  Hylocitrea.

Bird Families of the World holly grail - New Guinea!

Project progress - Bird Families of the World 244/250
97.6%

Most of New Guinea’s 7 endemic bird families member seen only on the highlands. Tari Gap area is less accessible than legendary Kumul Lodge and trails, but it seems that birding there is more productive. My wish list included also the non-endemic Boatbills which have a representor in north-east Australia. Some finding hints:

  • Blue-capped Ifirta seen on mossy trees in a few locations in Tari area, sometimes a few birds together
  • Tit Berrypecker and Crested Berrypecker: Tit BP. seen just up above the canopy. Crested BP seen once or twice by others.
  • Wattled Ploughbill was co-operative for a few minutes on our first day, later was much harder
  • Several species of Berrypeckers and Longbills seen in both highlands and lowlands sites. Fan-tailed BP is probably the easiest to photograph.
  • Mottled Berryhunter seen on fruiting trees a few time in Tari area.
  • Satinbirds – The long lasting Crested Satinbird which was seen in the  Kumul feeders did not show up. Loria’s Satinbird heard in a few highlands locations, usually parching far up on tree tops.
  • Melampittas – Lesser Melampitta heard in many places, including in Kumul lodge, but as a highly secretive bird, tough to seen and photograph.
  • Boatbills – Black-breasted Boatbill was common and co-operative in the highlands. The non-endemic Yellow-breasted Boatbill seen one in lowlands.

237. Family #161: Ifrita (Ifritidae) |  Blue-capped Ifrita.

238. Family #146: Tit Berrypecker and Crested Berrypecker (Paramythiidae) |  Tit Berrypecker.

239. Family #143: Ploughbill (Eulacestomatidae) |  Wattled Ploughbill.

240. Family #169: Berrypeckers and Longbills (Melanocharitidae) |  Fan-tailed Berrypecker.

241. Family #152: Mottled Berryhunter (Rhagologidae) |  Mottled Berryhunter.

242. Family #152: Satinbirds (Cnemophilidae) |  Loria’s Satinbird.

243. Family #164:Melampittas (Melampittidae) |  Lesser Melampitta.

244. Family #150:Boatbills (Machaerirhynchidae) |  Black-breasted Boatbill.

Wonderful plain plan for the Plains Wanderer

Project progress - Bird Families of the World 236/250
94%

Clean up Australian continent endemic families, clean up non-passerines families, second try after the failure in 2018, finally I’ve ticked Plains Wanderer!  Thanks Simon Starr for great tour!

After wandering an hour or so in the dark, wet grassy plains of in north Victoria, we’ve got my new, criticly endangered, nocturnal, monotype, polyandry, endemic bird family: Plains Wanderer!

Trying to cleanup Aussie land

Project progress - Bird Families of the World 224/250
90%

My second trip to Australia was an attempt to cleanup all missing families. Out of 7 families on my wish-list, 6 where seen & photographed. All seen in New South Wales and Victoria, so visiting West Australia on the trip’s second leg, just added new species.

I started with an endemic hard one: Scrub-birds – Rufous Scrub-bird on Gloucester Tops, NSW

219. Family #128: Scrub-birds (Atrichornithidae) | Rufous Scrub-bird

Next endemic – Bristlebirds – Eastern Bristlebird on Barren Grounds, NSW & Rufous Bristlebird on a few locations along the Great Ocean Road, VIC

220. Family #133: Bristlebirds (Dasyornithidae| Rufous Bristlebird

Crusoe Reservoir near Bedigo, VIC contributed two new families: Australo-Papuan Bellbirds – Crested Bellbird & Owlet-nightjars – Australian Owlet-nightjar.

221. Family #144: Australo-Papuan Bellbirds (Oreoicidae) | Crested Bellbird

222. Family #26: Owlet-nightjars (Aegothelidae) | Australian Owlet-nightjar

Denilliquin, NSW area: The dipped family, Plains-Wanderer, was a great disappointment since the tour for it with Phil Maher scheduled almost a year earlier. We tried hard spotlighting for hours without success. The absence of rain for long time probably moved the birds to different areas. The good news –  I’ll need to visit Australia again! Anyhow, Denilliquin is now on project map with another Australian endemic family: Shrike-tit – Crested Shrike-tit.

223. Family #145: Shrike-tit (Falcunculidae) | Crested Shrike-tit

Last but not least: Quail-thrushes – Spotted Quail-thrush on Brisbane Ranges NP, VIC

224. Family #138: Quail-thrushes and Jewel-babblers (Cinclosomatidae) | Spotted Quail-thrush

The most remote endemic bird family and the only one for Oceania

Project progress - Bird Families of the World 215/250
86%

The only endemic family for Oceania and the most desired bird in New Caledonia is the flightless Kagu, which can be seen easily on Le Parc Provincial de la Rivière Bleue.  Entering the park requires a local guide, and we are happy to recommend on Isabelle Jollit from caledoniabirds.com which can also help with other local endemics. New Caledonia with few other islands is in the tiny biogeography region of Oceania. Due practical reasons, Oceana is included on this site maps and categories with the nearby Australasia region.
